Appelé familièrement "The Big E", il était le sixième porte-avions de la marine américaine. Lancé en 1936, il est le seul porte-avions de la classe Yorktown et l'un des trois seuls porte-avions américains mis en service avant la Seconde Guerre mondiale à avoir survécu à la guerre (les autres étant le Saratoga et le Ranger). Il a participé à plus d'actions majeures de la guerre contre le Japon que n'importe quel autre navire américain. Ces actions incluent ;
The USS Enterprise (CV-6) was a Yorktown-class aircraft carrier built for the US Navy in the 1930s. She was the seventh US Navy ship of that name.
Colloquially known as "The Big E", she was the sixth aircraft carrier in the US Navy. Launched in 1936, she is the only carrier of the Yorktown class and one of only three US carriers commissioned before the Second World War to survive the war (the others being the Saratoga and the Ranger). She took part in more major actions in the war against Japan than any other American ship. These actions included ;
- the attack on Pearl Harbor - 18 Douglas SBD Dauntless dive bombers from her air group arrived over the harbour during the attack; seven were shot down, eight airmen were killed and two wounded, making Enterprise the only US carrier with men at Pearl Harbor during the attack and the first to suffer casualties in the Pacific War
- the Battle of Midway,
- the Battle of the Eastern Solomon Islands,
- the Battle of the Santa Cruz Islands, various other air-sea engagements during the Guadalcanal campaign,
- the Battle of the Philippine Sea
- the Battle of Leyte Gulf.
Enterprise was awarded 20 battle stars, the most for an American warship in the Second World War, and was the most decorated American ship of the Second World War. She was also the first American ship to sink an enemy warship after the declaration of war in the Pacific, when her planes sank the Japanese submarine I-70 on 10 December 1941. On three occasions during the war, the Japanese announced that she had been sunk in action, earning her the nickname "the grey ghost". By the end of the war, her planes and guns had shot down 911 enemy aircraft, sunk 71 ships and damaged or destroyed 192 others.
Despite public efforts after the war to turn the Enterprise into a museum ship, she was finally dismantled between 1958 and 1960.
Of the dozen or so models of the Big E at the 700th, the most 'accurate' are those from Tom's Modelworks, available in two configurations: 1942 (Battle of Santa Cruz) and 1944 after her final refit.
This is the 1944 version. In addition to the modified armament and radar equipment, the ship was fitted with a large anti-torpedo bubble on the port side that made its hull slightly asymmetrical. This affected displacement and Enterprise lost almost 2 knots of speed and had to sail with the rudder slightly bent to move forward in a straight line.

As with its last productions, TMW is now calling on a group of American craftsmen specialising in 3D to include parts that are finer and more precise than the 2014 originals in moulded resin. It's a very welcome facelift for these kits, which faithfully respect the original plans.

Finally, the 3-tone camouflage scheme, the only one of this type worn by Enterprise for only the last 3 months of 1944 during her night fighter training period off Pearl Harbor. Unfortunately for modelers, this aircraft carrier spent the rest of the war in Measure 21, i.e. entirely Navy Blue 5-N, a livery that is very difficult and disappointing to reproduce.
