Dans la course "qui va sortir le premier le nouveau porte-avions américain" nous avons un gagnant avec Magic Factory, une boite chinoise de Shenzen qui sort une belle version au 700e.
Disons-le : quand les premières photos, ou plutôt visuels 3D sont sortis l'été dernier, la maquette avait l'air décevante avec peu d'éléments et ce qu'on pensait être un "machin" assez basique. Au point que j'avais zappé le kit. Mais voici deux semaines, une vidéo "ouverture de boite" sur un forum américain m'a convaincu de changer d'avis.
In the race to see who will be the first to bring out the new American aircraft carrier, we have a winner with Magic Factory, a Chinese company based in Shenzen that is offering a beautiful 700th version.
Let's face it: when the first photos, or rather 3D visuals, came out last summer, the model looked disappointing, with few elements and what we thought was a fairly basic 'thing'. So much so that I skipped the kit. But a few weeks ago, a 'box-opening' video on an American forum convinced me to change my mind.
Au final on se retrouve avec un kit très copieux en nombre de pièces, un hangar complet à monter à l'intérieur, plein de types d'avions (Hornet, Growler, F35, Hawkeye et même deux drones ravitailleurs Stingray, une planche de décal à couper le souffle.
La qualité et la finesse du moulage placent cette maquette exactement au niveau du JFK de Trumpeter à la même échelle : j'ai pu comparer.
A priori j'y vois trois défauts :
- les gravures-repère des marquages sur le pont sont trop marquées mais seront recouvertes (on espère) par les décals
- le dessous de l'encorbellement du pont à l'arrière tribord est "complètement loupé" si l'on en croit Ray D. Bean, mais outre que ça ne se voit pas beaucoup, les détails sont une pièce rapportée, donc très facile à changer pour du scratch ou de la 3D. Ray publie d'ailleurs un DVD rempli de photos du Ford qui pourra aider. (26$ au Floating Drydock)
- enfin j'ai lu quelque part que le bulge d'étrave avait une section circulaire et non pas ovoïde comme sur la maquette. Hihihi, m'en fiche : je fais du waterline !
Vu la taille des pièces tout est emballé par pas moins de trois couches de blister en plastique transparent !
You end up with a very copious kit in terms of the number of parts, a complete hangar to assemble inside, lots of different types of aircraft (Hornet, Growler, F35, Hawkeye and even two Stingray tanker drones) and a breathtaking decal sheet.
The quality and finesse of the moulding put this model exactly on a par with Trumpeter's JFK at the same scale: I was able to compare.
However, I can see three shortcomings:
- the marker engravings on the deck are too prominent but will hopefully be covered by the decals
- the underside of the deck corbel on the starboard aft is 'completely wrong' according to Ray D. Bean, but apart from the fact that it's not very noticeable, the details are a patch, so very easy to change for scratch or 3D. Ray has also released a DVD full of photos of the Ford, which may help. (26$ at Floating Drydock)
- Finally, I read somewhere that the bow bulge has a circular cross-section and not an ovoid as on the model. Hihihi, I don't care: I'm a waterline sailor!
Given the size of the parts, everything is packaged in no less than three layers of transparent plastic blister packs!

L'avant est correctement restitué avec la fin des lignes continues des super carriers, des Forrestal aux Nimitz pour une sorte de cassure au niveau du pont du hangar, adoptée pour simplifier la fabrication.
The front end is correctly rendered, with the continuous lines of the super carriers, from the Forrestal to the Nimitz, replaced by a kind of break in the hangar deck, adopted to simplify manufacture.
La nouveauté, c'est le hangar représenté complet : sol, plafond, parois
What's new is the complete hangar: floor, ceiling, bulkheads, etc.
Les ascenseurs. 70 ans après l'US Navy revient à TROIS ascenseurs au lieu de quatre. Il faut dire que ces monstres hissent deux avions à la fois. La réduction à trois résulte d'une optimisation poussée des mouvements entre le hangar et le pont qui a montré que c'était possible avec la même cadence que sur les Nimitz, économisait un ascenseur (prix) et enlevait une ouverture dans la poutre-navire, le rendant plus solide.
The elevators. 70 years on, the US Navy has gone back to using THREE lifts instead of four. It has to be said that these monsters hoist two aircraft at a time. The reduction to three was the result of extensive optimisation of the movements between the hangar and the deck, which showed that it was possible to do this at the same rate as on the Nimitzes, save a lift (price) and remove an opening in the ship's beam, making it more sturdy.

Pour ceux qui ont la vue basse et refusent l'Optivisor, rappelons que 3D Wild a sorti le même au 350e à un prix... nucléaire. Ray Bean a annoncé récemment que Trumpeter travaillait sur une version au 200e pour 2025.
For those of you with poor eyesight who don't want the Optivisor, remember that 3D Wild has released the same model at 1:350 at a... nuclear price. Ray Bean recently announced that Trumpeter was working on a 200th version for 2025.
